The Illinois Army National Guard trains one weekend a month and two weeks each summer. The pay is great as well as the educational and Service member benefits. The selective reserve also offers retirement, which is not offered by a majority of part-time jobs. You can easily earn enough money through both your guard service and your guard benefits to pay for your education, all for only 39 days a year.

There are several different options for enlistment, such as Delayed Entry Option, Split Option Training, and Stripes to Buddies, to help you find the best for you. If you have more questions, please ask your recruiter.

Delayed Entry Option

The Delayed Training Option is available for those individuals who would like to enlist now, start drawing a pay check, and delay their training for later. High school juniors, seniors, college students, and those individuals who have job or school obligations can delay their training for up to 9 months (270 days).

Split Option Training

The Split Training Option was created for those individuals who cannot complete their entire training obligation at one time.

High school juniors, seniors, college students, and those people who have job or school obligations can "split" their training. They can attend Basic Training, return to their home, and delay up to one year completion of their Advanced Training.

The Delayed Training Option is often elected with the Split Training Option. A high school junior or senior can enlist in September, start attending Unit Training Assemblies with a Recruit Sustainment Company in their area, attend Basic Training during the summer, go back to school in the fall, again attend Unit Training Assemblies with Recruit Sustainment Company in their area, and finish their Advanced Training during the summer of the following year.

This program was created especially for high school members.

Stripes for Buddies

The Stripes for Buddies Program is an excellent rank advancement tool. Individuals who enlist with less than 2 years of college will hold the rank of Private (E-1). A member who holds the rank of Private may bring one qualified individual who enlist in the Army National Guard and be advanced to Private (E-2). If that same individual is responsible for two or more individuals enlisting in the Army National Guard can be advanced to the rank of Private First Class (E-3). Each promotion means more money!
