BRIGADIER GENERAL MICHAEL J. GLISSON BRIGADIER GENERAL MICHAEL J. GLISSON

Brigadier General Michael J. Glisson was appointed as the Director of Joint Staff for the Illinois Army National Guard on January 7, 2016. As Director of Joint Staff, he is responsible for developing and coordinating all policies, programs and plans in Joint Matters that affect Illinois' 13,000 Army and Air National Guard personnel. He is responsible for the integration and coordination of National Guard capabilities in support of Homeland Defense and Defense Support to Civil Authorities operations to include the operational control of 13,000 dedicated Army and Air personnel.

General Glisson provides the communication and coordination channels with all State, Federal and intergovernmental agencies in matters of domestic operations, domestic programs, anti-terrorism and force protection security operations, military support to civil authorities, international affairs, intergovernmental and interagency cooperation and strategic development to include 37 state agencies, 22 federal agencies and 23 international government and military organizations.

General Glisson has more than 25 years of military service as a commissioned officer. He commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in May 1988 after completing the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Southern Illinois University. General Glisson has served in various command and staff positions at different echelons. He deployed to Afghanistan as CJ7 Director, Afghan National Security Forces Training and Education Development in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from September 2008 to September 2009. Glisson has served in multiple State Active Duty missions and has participated in multiple overseas training missions. In his recent previous assignments, Glisson served as the 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team Operations Officer, Joint Force Headquarters - Illinois Plans Branch Chief, and Commander of the 65th Troop Command.

General Glisson holds a bachelor's degree in Metalsmithing from Southern Illinois University and a master's degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.

General Glisson's military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal (3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Air Force Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (1 Silver Oak Leaf Cluster and 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), National Defense Service Medal (1 Bronze Service Star), Afghanistan Campaign Medal (1 Bronze Campaign Star), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (Mobilization Device, Silver Hourglass Device, and Numeral 2), Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon (with Numeral 3), Non-Article 5 NATO Medal and a Joint Meritorious Unit Award.
