In 1980 the original military purpose for Marseilles Training Area (MTA) was weekend outdoor training and rifle and pistol firing training. The site was not designed for long periods of training. The current mission of MTA is to provide a training site for combat, combat support and combat service support units through battalion size. MTA is classified as a collective training area. The Illinois Department of Military Affairs (DMAIL) uses the site for field training during spring, summer, and fall and for cantonment and range firing on a year round basis (MTA Environmental Assessment). Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) uses the site for wildlife propagation, forestry and prairie habitat restoration, and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout the year and upland game hunting during the late fall and winter months. The total acreage of land managed by the IDNR and DMAIL, both owned and leased, is 2,826 acres.
