The regiments of the Illinois National Guard began conducting summer training at Camp Lincoln in 1886. The Chicago regiments arrived by train and marched from the train station to Camp Lincoln, entering the grounds through a rather ornate gate located on Grand Avenue (before there was a north and south). Camp Lincoln continues to be the heart of all activities of the Illinois Army and Air National Guard. The camp continues to grow and support the Guard and the State of Illinois. Camp Lincoln has been a vital part of Illinois? rich military history for nearly one-hundred and twenty years. Its one-hundred and sixty acres stands as a monument to its soldiers and airmen who have faithfully responded to the calls of the State and the Nation to serve in time of crisis.
