Brigadier General Daniel M. Krumrei is the 38th Adjutant General of the State of Illinois. He assumed the duties of the Adjutant General on December 21, 2012.

He serves as a member of the Governor’s Cabinet as the Director of the Illinois Department of Military Affairs and is the Governor’s principal advisor on military matters. As the Adjutant General, General Krumrei is the senior officer in the chain-of-command for both the Illinois Army and Air National Guard. He is responsible for the daily operations of the Illinois National Guard and oversees its approximately 13,000 men and women in uniform (2,286 of whom are full time) and the 230 civilian employees in the Illinois Department of Military Affairs. As the Adjutant General, General Krumrei works closely with the leadership of National Guard Bureau and the Departments of the Army and Air Force.

The Illinois National Guard missions include supporting civil authorities during domestic operations and emergency relief efforts and supporting U.S. military operations across the world. General Krumrei is responsible for the Illinois National Guard’s overall operational readiness. General Krumrei maintains the Illinois National Guard’s relationships with a multitude of local, state and federal agencies as well as nongovernmental organizations that support the Illinois National Guard’s missions. He also maintains a close relationship with Polish military forces through the National Guard’s State Partnership Program.

Prior to becoming The Adjutant General, General Krumrei served as Command Chaplain, Illinois Army National Guard from May 2005 to December 2012. Additionally, he served as Staff Chaplain, Joint Forces Headquarters Illinois National Guard. General Krumrei’s previous assignments include serving in the following organizations; HHC, 32nd Infantry Brigade (Separate) (Mechanized); HHB 1/194th Field Artillery; 209th Medical Clearing Company; HHD 232nd Corps Support Battalion; and 65th Troop Command Brigade.

General Krumrei enlisted into the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 32nd Infantry Brigade (Separate) (Mechanized), Wisconsin National Guard as a Telecommunications Specialist in 1977. He received a direct appointment as Chaplain Candidate in 1982 while in the Oklahoma National Guard. General Krumrei received his appointment as a Chaplain in 1986 while in the Iowa National Guard. General Krumrei deployed to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in support of Operation Desert Storm in 1991. He also served in overseas missions and operations in Japan, Italy, Ukraine, Germany, Malawi, Poland, Jamaica and Congo.

General Krumrei is a graduate of Phillips University, Enid, Oklahoma, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 1981 and a Master of Divinity in Theology in 1985. He also graduated from Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansa in 1996; U.S. Army War College, Pennsylvania in 2006, the Joint and Combined Warfighting School and Joint Forces Staff College, National Defense University, Norfolk, Virginia in 2009. He is Joint Professional Military Education II qualified.

As a civilian, General Krumrei served in the ministry for more than 30 years. Before his appointment as the Adjutant General, he served as Senior Pastor of the Parkway Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Springfield.
