Command Sergeant Major Howard O. Robinson Sr. assumed his position as the Illinois National Guard’s 10th State Command Sergeant Major and 3rd Senior Enlisted Adviser on December 1, 2011. While serving in this position CSM Robinson serves as the principal adviser to the Adjutant General of Illinois on all Soldier and Airman related matters. Together they oversee the training of approximately 13,000 Illinois National Guardsmen both Army and Air. CSM Robinson’s primary focus as senior enlisted adviser is to provide leadership and guidance and to ensure Soldier, Airman and Family Readiness at all times. With more than 20 years of service CSM Robinson began his military career in the Illinois Army National Guard enlisting on July 8, 1983 serving with the 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery in Chicago. During his assignment CSM Robinson held the following positions headquarters battery fire support sergeant, battalion fire support sergeant, brigade fire support sergeant, battalion intelligence sergeant and operations sergeant.

In December 2001 Robinson was selected as the senior enlisted advisor for the 2nd Battalion 123rd Field Artillery in Milan Illinois with subordinate units in Galesburg and Macomb Illinois. Robinson served in this battalion until September 2003 when he was reassigned as the battalion Command Sergeant Major for 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery in Chicago. In September 2007 CSM Robinson was selected as the Brigade command sergeant major for the 404th Chemical Brigade based in Chicago. On June 1, 2009 Robinson was selected as the Army National Guard Land Component Senior Enlisted Advisor assuming responsibility for the training and readiness of all Army National Guard units within Illinois.

Robinson is a 2006 graduate of the United States Army Sergeant Major Academy Fort Bliss Texas. His military education also includes the Army’s Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officers Course, Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, Tactical Information Operations Course and the Senior Enlisted Joint professional development course. Robinson served overseas in Germany participating in a War Fighter Exercise at U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr and has participated in various training events throughout Europe.
