Military Funeral and Honors |
Mission

Our mission is to render professional Military Funeral Honors,
in accordance with service tradition, to all eligible veterans when
requested by an authorized family member.
Funeral Honors
The Illinois Army National Guard (ILARNG) performs all military funerals
in accordance with the Army National Guard Standard Operating Procedures
for Military Funeral Honors. The most common military funeral is the
standard honors. The standard Military Funeral Honors ceremony consists
of the playing of Taps and the folding and presentation of the United
States flag to the veteran's family. The ceremony is performed by a
funeral honors detail consisting of at least two members of the ILARNG.
Taps may be played by a bugler or, if a bugler is not available, by
using a quality recorded version.
To obtain military funeral honors, proof of service must be provided.
Typically, this proof will be in the form of discharge papers such as a
DD 214 (Active Duty) or NGB 22 (National Guard). This documentation
should be given to the funeral home you have selected. The funeral home
will contact the Casualty Area Command (CAC) (1-800-350-7746). The CAC
will then locate a funeral honors team in your area to provide services
at your veteran's funeral. If you are not using a funeral home, please
call our office at (217) 761-3873.
