Phoenix, Ariz. - Ken Salas and Jackie Platt-Whitfield present Major Gen. Rodney Boyd, Adjutant General of the State of Illinois with a saber that belonged to retired Brig. Gen. Walter J. Whitfield Sept. 9, 2024, at First Institutional Baptist Church in Phoenix, Arizona. Brig. Gen. Whitfield was the first black person to be federally recognized as a brigadier general in the Illinois Army National Guard.
