SPRINGFIELD, Illinois - Joaquin Lainson, president, Philippine Student Association at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, talks about the history of the Philippines, during the Liberation of Baguio commemoration event at the Urbana Armory April 26. The Illinois 300th birthday event, which served as a kickoff event for Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month which begins May 1, featured presentations from Lainson, Command Sgt. Maj. (ret.) Mark Bowman who talked about the 33rd Division’s history during World War II, and Illinois Army National Guard Maj. Matt Larson, 6th Battalion, 54th Security Forces Assistance Brigade, who recently completed a year-long deployment to the Philippines.
