Phoenix, Ariz. - Soldiers with the Arizona National Guard Honor Guard conduct the flag folding ceremony during a full military honors funeral for retired Brig. Gen. Walter J. Whitfield, Sept. 9, 2024, at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix, Arizona. Brig Gen. (ret) Whitfield, who passed away August 16, 2024, in Phoenix, Arizona, was the first black person to be federally recognized as a brigadier general in the Illinois Army National Guard.
