COL Metzdorff is a 2002 graduate of Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Springfield, Illinois. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Excelsior College, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
COL Metzdorff enlisted into the Active Duty Army on August 22nd, 1996, as an Infantryman. While serving on active duty he served with 1-41 IN in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Fort Riley, Kansas. In August 2000, COL Metzdorff joined the ILARNG as a Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) Cadet while attending Illinois State University. In March 2001 COL Metzdorff transitioned to Office Candidate School and was commissioned as an Infantry Officer on 10 September 2002.
Initially serving as an Infantry Platoon Leader in 1-131 IN, COL Metzdorff mobilized in October 2003 and deployed to Iraq with 2-162 IN (Oregon). Upon his return in 2005, he was assigned as the Company Executive Officer (XO) and subsequently the Assistant S3 for HHC, 66 IN BDE and began working Additional Duty Operational Support (ADOS) as a Transformation project officer as the 66 IN BDE transitioned to the 33 IBCT. COL Metzdorff transitioned on ADOS to the G3 ILARNG as the New Equipment Training (NET) / Displaced Equipment Training (DET) manager for the state of Illinois. While serving as Commander Bravo Troop, 2-106 CAV, COL Metzdorff was selected for Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) duty in Recruiting and Retention Battalion (RRB) and served as the Officer In Charge (OIC) of Enlisted Accessions from 2008 – 2010. He then served as the 33 IBCT S1 (Personnel Officer) from 2010 – 2012. Later COL Metzdorff served as the Squadron OIC and S3 (Operations Officer) for the 2-106 CAV from 2012 – 2014. In 2014, he transitioned to the 404th MEB and served as the BDE S4 (Logistics Officer) from 2014 – 2016 when he transitioned to the BDE XO position and served as the BDE Training Officer until 2017. COL Metzdorff was selected for a T10 tour and served as a Branch Chief in the Acquisitions and Program Management Office at National Guard Bureau in Arlington, VA from 2017 – 2019. Upon his return to Illinois, COL Metzdorff served as the Brigade Executive Officer (XO) and OIC for the 33 Infantry Brigade Combat Team from 2019 until 2020 when he was selected for Battalion Command of the Illinois Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion (RRB). COL Metzdorff served as Commander of RRB from 2020 until 2022 when he was selected to serve as the Deputy Military Personnel Officer (MILPO) G1 for the Illinois Army National Guard. COL Metzdorff served as the Deputy G1 from 2022 until 2023 and then as the Military Personnel Officer (MILPO) / G1 for the Illinois Army National Guard from 2023 until 2025. COL Metzdorff currently serves as the Chief of Staff for the Illinois Army National Guard.
His military education includes the Infantry One-Station Unit Training (OSUT), Airborne School, Infantry Officer Basic Course, Fast Rope Insertion/Extraction System (FRIES) Course, Maneuver Captains Career Course, Human Resources Management Qualification Course (HRMQC), Reserve Component Theater Sustainment Course, Military Police (MP) Officer Transition Course, Command and General Staff Officer Course (ILE), Advanced Operations Course (AOC), Level one Program Management certification, the Army Force Management Course, and Senior Service College (U.S. Army War College).
A few of his awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (3 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (1 OLC), Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, and Parachutist Badge.
COL Metzdorff and his wife Alyson have three children. They have one daughter Isabella (20) attending Illinois State University and two sons; Jackson (18) attending Western Illinois University and Cooper (12) a 7th grader at Corpus Christi Junior High School.
