SPRINGFIELD, Illinois - Sgt. Maj. David Merritt, the Operations and Planning Sergeant Major for the Illinois Army National Guard, gives remarks during his retirement ceremony at the Illinois Military Academy on Camp Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois July 22. Merritt has 30-years of military service. He enlisted into the Army in August of 1992 as a private, serving five years as a Petroleum Supply Specialist at Fort Hood, Texas and Fort Lewis, Washington. He then enlisted into the Illinois Army National Guard as a traditional Soldier in August of 1997. He will continue to reside in East Peoria after his retirement with his wife, Wendy and two sons, Gunner and Tavin.
