Phoenix, Ariz. - Soldiers of the Arizona National Guard Honor Guard stand at attention for the playing of TAPS during a full military honor's funeral for retired Brig. Gen. Walter J. Whitfield, Sept. 9, 2024, at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix, Arizona. Brig Gen. Whitfield was the first black person to be federally recognized as a brigadier general in the Illinois Army National Guard.
