Phoenix, Ariz. - Major Gen. Rodney Boyd, Adjutant General of the State of Illinois presents the U.S. flag to Jackie Platt-Whitfield, widow of retired Brig. Gen. Walter J. Whitfield, during a full military honor's funeral ceremony Sept. 9, 2024, at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix, Arizona. Major Gen. Boyd is the highest-ranking person of color in the Illinois National Guard’s history and the first Black Adjutant General of Illinois and Commander of the Illinois National Guard. Brig. Gen. Whitfield, who passed away August 16, 2024, was the first black person to be federally recognized as a brigadier general in the Illinois Army National Guard. (National Guard photo by Brian A.
