Gov. Pritzker Names Colonel Steven B. Rice as Assistant Adjutant General - Air of the Illinois National Guard

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has selected Illinois Air National Guard Director of Staff Colonel Steven B. Rice of Morrison, Illinois, as the next Assistant Adjutant General – Air of the Illinois National Guard. With the selection, Colonel Rice will be promoted to Brigadier General and will serve as one of two Governor-appointed deputies to Major General Rodney Boyd, the Adjutant General of Illinois and Commander of the Illinois National Guard. The other deputy is Brigadier General Lenny Williams, the Assistant Adjutant General – Army. Col. Rice will replace Maj. Gen. Dan McDonough, who will retire after more than 39 years of military service.

725th Transportation Company Kept European Command Fueled

About 160 Soldiers of the Illinois Army National Guard’s Machesney Park-based 725th Transportation Company celebrated a deployment to U.S. European Command in which the unit completed more than 93 real-world missions, supported two major multinational exercises, and delivered more than 2.1 million gallons of fuel – all the while making personal and professional improvements in themselves.

Freeport-Based Military Police Unit Returns From Critical Mission in the Tundra

There, with just about four hours of daylight, were about 65 Soldiers of the Illinois Army National Guard’s Freeport-based 333rd Military Police Company keeping their eyes and ears open among the frozen forests of interior Alaska protecting anti-ballistic missiles critical to the defense of United States of America.“Few people have ever heard of Fort Greely but every American sleeps under the protection it provides,” said Capt. Christian Grego, the 333rd Military Police Co. commander. “I had the honor of leading a great group of men and women who safeguarded our homeland in an environment that truly tests one's character, resilience, and discipline. I could not be more proud of those who were to my left and right.”

On the historic grounds of Fort Donelson, Tennessee, where Union and Confederate forces once clashed during the Civil War, a new generation of Illinois Army National Guard leaders walked in the footsteps of history. Officer Candidate School Class 70-25 from the Illinois Army National Guard traveled to the battlefield May 16–18 to study leadership, reflect on history, and strengthen their skills as they prepare to become commissioned officers.

Newest Commissioned Officer Took Path from West Africa to Illinois National Guard Leadership

Bafia is near the center of Cameroon in the tropics of West Africa, some 6,450 miles from Chicagoland. In 2017, Juliana Nkafu took that journey away from the Snoutfish of the Mbam and Sanaga Rivers to the Bluegill and Largemouth Bass of the Chicago River; away from the African Oil Palm, Moringa and Mangos to the Elms, Oaks, Maples and miles and miles of corn and soybeans of Illinois. Nkafu took a journey to the “land of the free and the home of the brave.” On April 26, after the playing of our National Anthem, she stood in front of several of her family and friends and dozens of her fellow Illinois Army National Guard Soldiers and took an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” She commissioned as the newest officer in the Illinois Army National Guard and the U.S. Army. Nkafu graduated from the Accelerated Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a U.S. Army second lieutenant at the 129th Regiment (Regional Training Institute) headquarters on Camp Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois. She enrolled in OCS in the fall of 2024.

St. Louis Police Officer, Combat Veteran, Retires after 23 Years in the Illinois Army National Guard

When Sean Fortune was a private in the Illinois Army National Guard’s “Mighty” 1344th Transportation Company, he introduced himself to his brand-new platoon leader as his “driver.” “He said, ‘Stick with me and you’ll make captain before you know it. I can’t guarantee major, but you’ll make captain,’” said the platoon leader, now colonel, Shawn Nokes – the commander of the 129th Regiment (Regional Training Institute). That private didn’t do so badly either.

Moline Police Lieutenant and Combat Veteran Retires from the Illinois Army National Guard with Top Enlisted Rank, Over 30 Years of Service

Command Sgt. Maj. Jonathan Genisio of Orion started his career in the Illinois Army National Guard as an “impressively bad” light-wheeled vehicle mechanic, but 30 years later he retired as a top-ranked noncommissioned officer (NCO), Commandant of the 129th Regiment (Regional Training Institute), and with the Legion of Merit and a Master Infantry Combat Badge affixed to his uniform.

The 65th Troop Command Brigade (TCB) welcomed Command Sgt. Maj. The Illinois National Guard's Easter Egg Hunt for Military Families at Mount Vernon Armory was a huge success despite the rain today (March 29). The program, co-sponsored by Survivor Outreach Services of Illinois and the Illinois National Guard Youth Programs, was open to military families and the families of fallen service members. Events like the Easter Egg Hunt help strengthen the military community. Many of those participating were children of deployed Soldiers from the Illinois Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry Regiment with armories across Southern Illinois, including Mount Vernon.

Illinois National Guard Recruiting Has Record February

Illinois Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion (RRB) commander, Lt. Col. Lance Frail, puts the tag line “love the process and you will succeed!” at the end of every email to his staff. “We talk a lot about loving the process and that it will lead you to success,” said Frail. “If you are doing the small things, always prospecting, you will be successful.” Of the 11 companies in RRB, eight have exceeded their recruiting goals each of the last three months. February was the most productive recruiting month since March of 2019. Four companies doubled their recruiting goal in February.

Eureka Soldier Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel

Jacob Beard, of Eureka, Illinois, was promoted to lieutenant colonel in a ceremony March 15 at Heartland Community College in Normal, Illinois. Beard, the officer-in-charge of the 404th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade (MEB), headquartered in Normal, grew up in Alexander, Illinois and enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves in 2005. After graduating basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he contracted as a cadet with the Western Illinois University Reserve Officer Training Corps program. In 2006, he transferred to the Illinois Army National Guard’s 233rd Military Police Company where he became a platoon leader after commissioning from the WIU ROTC program in 2007.

When Illinois Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Quentin Corrington was about three years old, his father died of an accidental overdose. As Corrington grew up in Decatur, Illinois, his uncles, Lt. Col. The Illinois Army National Guard’s Woodstock-based H Co., Recruit Sustainment Program – The ‘Honey Badgers’ – seem to have taken on the traits of the unit’s moniker. Led by 1st Sgt. Matthew Serowka, they were the top recruiting unit in the Illinois Army National Guard in fiscal year 2024. The Honey Badgers enlisted 191 Soldiers last fiscal year. The unit already has 44 recruits so far this fiscal year, and recorded its highest month on record in October with 26 recruits.

Remains of WWII Illinois Army National Guard Soldier Return to Illinois After Nearly 84 Years

Illinois Army National Guard Pfc. Harry Jerele, of Berkeley, Illinois, is finally home, nearly 84 years after Company B, 192nd Tank Battalion, based in Maywood, was activated for federal service, Nov. 25, 1940. The flag-draped coffin containing his remains arrived Oct. 1 at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, aboard American Airlines Flight 2412.

Governor JB Pritzker has selected former Illinois Army National Guard Chief of Staff Colonel Lenny Williams as the next Assistant Adjutant General – Army of the Illinois National Guard and Commander of the Illinois Army National Guard. With the selection, Colonel Williams will be promoted to Brigadier General and will serve as one of two Governor-appointed deputies to Major General Rodney Boyd, the Adjutant General of Illinois and Commander of the Illinois National Guard. The other deputy is Brigadier General Daniel McDonough, the Assistant Adjutant General – Air and Commander of the Illinois Air National Guard. Governor Pritzker promoted General Boyd from Assistant Adjutant General – Army to Adjutant General in May, leaving the vacancy to lead the Illinois Army National Guard.

Maj. Gen. Rodney Boyd, The Adjutant General of Illinois and the Commander of the Illinois National Guard was the keynote speaker at the 8th Infantry Illinois National Guard Association annual scholarship ceremony on Aug. 10 at the Illinois Army National Guard's General Richard Jones Armory on Chicago's South Side. The 8th Infantry Association keeps the memory of the Illinois National Guard's all-African-American "Fighting" 8th Infantry alive and awards multiple scholarships each year. Boyd told the 14 scholarship recipients how he grew up just down the street on the South Side in a family with eight children in public housing and on public assistance. "One day I just decided, I'm going to change my trajectory," he said. He added that the scholarship recipients are also changing their trajectories. "Don't give up on yourself. It gets tough. It gets tough, but you are up for the challenge," the general said. The lineage and honors of the 8th Infantry Regiment is with the 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment with its headquarters in the General Jones Armory on the South Side.

Several months ago, 7-year-old Jamir Gibbs was suffering from bacterial meningitis related to his struggle with leukemia. It was hard, and painful, and her son was tired and getting discouraged, said Jamir's mother, Amanda Miller. "He's a child and having to fight through this illness... a child has no choice but to fight through it." And then Jamir received a 49-second video clip from Illinois Army National Guard 1st Sgt. Beau Detrick, then a sergeant first class. He asked Jamir to "stay in the fight" and said his courage, perseverance, and bravery are just what they look for in Soldiers.

Rosemary Dillon, of Chicago, was about five years old when her Uncle Harry, who was serving in the Illinois Army National Guard’s Company B, 192nd Tank Battalion, was activated for federal service, arriving in the Philippines just days before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and the next day, the Philippines. On Oct. 4, nearly 83 years after the start of World War II, Dillon’s Uncle Harry, Pfc. Harry Jerele, will be buried with full military honors at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood.

Peoria-based aviation battalion completes year-long overseas mission

Approximately 195 Illinois Army National Guard Soldiers serving with 1st Battalion, 106th Aviation Regiment, based in Peoria, and Company B, 935th Aviation Support Battalion, based in Kankakee, were welcomed home during a ceremony in Bloomington, April 13. The 106th returned home in February, following a year-long deployment to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.

Specialized team deploys to INDOPACOM area of responsibility

Friends and family gathered at Rock Island Arsenal’s Heritage Hall Feb. 4, for a mobilization ceremony for Logistics Advisory Team 6612 of the Illinois National Guard’s 6th Battalion, 54th Security Forces Assistance Brigade. The team of about half a dozen Soldiers will deploy to the Philippines to replace a team slated to come back in February. LAT 6612 will take over training and integrating with Filipino armed forces to bolster their medical and logistical operations.

Illinois Army National Guard Maj. The year was 1990 and a future Illinois National Guard member watched Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm unfold on national television and was inspired to “do something that means something.” “I had graduated high school and knew I wanted to go to college but didn’t know how I was going to pay for it because my parents couldn’t afford it,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Dena Ballowe of Carlinville, who retired as the Illinois National Guard’s top enlisted service member on Oct. 31 after 32 years of service in the Illinois Army National Guard. “I had moved to Indiana to live with my grandmother to see what Indiana had to offer.”

Retired Illinois National Guard Colonel From Champaign Awarded Legion of Merit Illinois Army National Guard Col. Jason Osberg of Champaign has been awarded the Legion of Merit. Osberg, a civilian airline pilot, retired from the Army in August after more than 33 years of service including as an aviation lift company commander in Iraq and as an operations officer in Kosovo . His last assignment was as Commander of the Peoria-based 65th Troop Command Brigade. The 65th oversees an artillery battalion, aviation battalion and other aviation companies, a civil support team, a digital liaison detachment, a public affairs detachment, a cyber defense team, military intelligence units, and an Army band. These units are spread throughout Illinois.

Illinois Army National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Mary Joan “MJ” Patten’s love of softball began when she was five years old, playing T-ball for the Rockford, Illinois, Park District. Patten, now of Caledonia, Wisconsin, continued playing softball throughout middle school, high school, and college. On July 18, Patten will don another softball uniform – as the only National Guard member competing in the 2023 All-Army Women’s Softball training camp and the Armed Forces Women’s Softball Championship.

Niantic Soldier Retires After 22 Years of Service

Matthew Dodsworth of Sherman, Illinois, was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel during a ceremony at Camp Lincoln in Springfield March 3. Dodsworth grew up in Jacksonville, Illinois, and is a 1999 graduate of Jacksonville Routt Catholic High School. He joined the Illinois Army National Guard as an infantryman on Jan. 20, 1998 and completed basic training in between his junior and senior years of high school.

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – Several Illinois veterans came to the Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs’ Desert Storm Remembrance Ceremony to remember the service of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Persian Gulf War and to commemorate a conflict that reshaped the U.S. military. The ceremony was held at the Illinois State Military Museum on Camp Lincoln, the Illinois National Guard’s headquarters in Springfield on Feb. 28. The date marked the 32nd anniversary of the cease fire announcement of the Persian Gulf War.

Maj. Gen. Rich Neely, the Adjutant General of Illinois and Commander of the Illinois National Guard, can add another achievement to a long list of achievements. Neely, a 1989 graduate of Illinois State University in Normal, was among five inductees into the College of Business’ 2023 Hall of Fame at Illinois State University, Feb. 23.

Approximately 190 Illinois Army National Guard Soldiers mobilize for overseas mission

Approximately 190 Soldiers from the Illinois Army National Guard’s 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 106th Aviation Regiment, based in Peoria, and Company B, 935th Aviation Support Battalion, based in Kankakee, mobilized for an overseas mission to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility in a ceremony Feb. 7 at the 182nd Airlift Wing, in Peoria. During the deployment the unit will provide aviation support to U.S. forces in the Middle East.
