Brig. Gen. Richard Neely, the Adjutant General, Illinois National Guard, visits Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 123rd Field Artillery Regiment on June 7, 2019. Soldiers of the 2-123 FA were called to state active duty in support of Illinois Emergency Management Agency’s flood response in Western Illinois. Soldiers have to adapt daily depending on ever-changing weather conditions and rising water levels by placing barriers and conducting sandbag operations. There are approximately 110 miles of river and levee systems that run from Quincy to Alton, Illinois. Over 400 soldiers and a dozen agencies have come together and put down over 4.5 million sandbags.
